Dickie Brothers Orchard
Dickie Brothers Orchard is one of the oldest, longest running same-family owned and operated farms in the USA! That’s an impressive stat! They also have a fascinating history!
“Dickie Brothers Orchard has been in our family since England’s King George II sold three tracts of land to our Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather James Dickie in 1752, 1758 and 1760. Grandpa James was required to begin working the land within 3 years. Our family has been farming this land ever since… 269 years and 9 generations. Now, that’s sustainability!
We grow and produce quality products and sell at the lowest price we can in order to help our customers have quality food at a fair price, yet still allow us to continue to run our farm.
When mother nature allows us to grow a full crop, we harvest 70,000 bushels of apples per year! But, we don’t just grow a few varieties of apples… we grow 20 different varieties of apples as well as peaches, nectarines, plums, blackberries, sweet potatoes, pumpkins and much more.
PYO apples begins mid August.
How about some apple picking hints and tips. ”
Apples ripen from the outside of the tree towards the center, so the apples on the outside of the tree will ripen first. Once an apple is picked, it stops ripening.
Picking apples directly from a tree is easy. Roll the apple upwards off the branch and give a little twist; don’t pull straight away from the tree.
If two apples are joined together at the top, both will come away at the same time.
Don’t shake the trees or branches.
The tree may become damaged and we need to protect our trees to ensure they remain healthy.”
Flanegan Farm
1707 Princess Anne Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23456
Flanagan Farm is located in an area commonly known as Pungo Ridge. Pungo Ridge is home to some of the most prime soils for vegetable farming in Virginia Beach. The part where Flanagan Farm is located on is currently farmed by the fourth and fifth generations to consecutively produce crops on this farm. This farm offers lifetimes of farming science and know how.
“We grow a variety of fruits and vegetables starting in the Spring and going all the way through fall.
We pride ourselves in giving our customers the best produce directly from our fields for their tables. Freshness and quality of produce at a fair price, is the basis of everything we do. We are a sustainable farm, not only being the fourth and fifth generations to farm this ground, but in our production practices as well. We follow integrated pest management (IPM), scouting fields and determining what critters need to be controlled and how based on economic thresholds. Basically only treating for a pest when the pest is causing enough damage where it is justified to control them, whether it be through cultural, biological, or chemical controls.
Each fall we offer Family Fall activities! We’ve got wagon rides across the farm, a U-Pick pumpkin patch, a Corn Maze as well as a Straw Maze for the younger crowd.”
Yoder’s Farm
1134 Browns Mill Rd, Rustburg, VA 24588
Yoder’s Farm offer pick-your-own to all the family so everyone can get out in the fresh air and for some good old fashioned outdoor fun.
“A few years ago, after a couple of small-scale pumpkin patches, we decided to introduce pumpkins as a new crop.
The great thing about the way we have decided to grow our pumpkins is that it complements our strawberry crop really well. Once the strawberry season is finished, in June, we plant pumpkins directly back into the plastic-covered strawberry hills. This allows us to drip irrigate the pumpkins throughout the long, hot, dry summer – maximizing fruit quality and shape. It also means we can feed fertilizer throughout the summer to enhance color and growth.
We have a number of varieties of pumpkins, orange ones, white ones, smooth ones, warty ones, and decorative ones.
Whether you want to pick your own pumpkins or select from ones we’ve already picked, we’re sure you’ll enjoy choosing your pumpkins here at the farm…”
