Easy Pickins Orchard

4805, 46 Bailey Rd, Enfield, CT 06082

You can look forward to the warmest of welcomes at Easy Pickin’s Orchard!

“Easy Pickin’s Orchard is a pick-your-own farm in Enfield, CT. Since opening in 1992, we’ve expanded “what we grow” to include tree fruit, berries, vegetables, herbs & flowers.  We aim to provide good, fresh produce to our customers, who enjoy, appreciate and support local agriculture — what we grow and how we grow it.  In addition to “pick-your-own,” we sell our produce at the farm and at several farmers’ markets, summer & winter. In apple-picking season, we have special activities; all season long we welcome visitors of all ages to enjoy grocery shopping outdoors: fresh produce in the fresh air.  Know your food and where it comes from; know your farmer; keep it local.  We’ll see you here, where the pickin’ is easy!

Our Blueberries start to ripen in early to mid-July. We grow 8 different varieties of blueberries in order to extend our harvest season to the middle of September. Our berry patch is watered & fertilized by an underground irrigation system. It’s also covered by a net, to keep the feathered friends from enjoying more berries than we do ! By having nets over the field we can allow our berries to grow to their full size and flavor. This really makes a difference for ease of picking and for taste. We have just over 1-1/2 acres of blueberry bushes; they get pruned every year to keep them in good shape for producing an abundant, easy-to pick blueberry harvest. Our blueberry varieties, in order of ripening, are Duke, Bluejay, Bluerae, Bluecrop, Coville, Berkeley, Late Blue, & Elliott.”

Lyman Orchards Farm Store at the Apple Barrel

32 Reeds Gap Rd, Middlefield, CT 06455

Lyman Orchards really is a big deal! From a modest working farm to the huge family attraction it is today, it has much to offer families.

“In their wildest dreams, colonial farmer John Lyman and his wife, Hope, could not have envisioned the complex and diverse enterprise that would evolve from their purchase in 1741 of a 37-acre parcel of land in what is now Middlefield. Now covering more than 1,100 acres of scenic farmland, Lyman Orchards is one of the most popular family attractions in New England.

Blueberries are a great snacking choice, not only for their delicious flavor and versatility in recipes, but because they are a nutritional powerhouse! Blueberry picking is a great family friendly activity!

Low in fat and calories, high in fiber and Vitamin C, blueberries are rich in antioxidants. Eating 1/2 cup of blueberries daily provides antioxidant activity that has been shown to help protect against the effects of aging, including heart disease, arthritis, and short-term memory loss.”

Jones Family Farms

606 Walnut Tree Hill Rd, Shelton, CT 06484

Jones Family Farms – “nestled in the White Hills of Shelton, with its 19th century dairy barn and homestead farmhouse, impresses the visitor as a peaceful and relaxed living environment. The beautiful countryside with its orderly rows of Christmas trees, neat stonewalls, and well-maintained fields are the result of efforts by seven generations of Jones family farmers.

The farmers of the 400-acre working farm invite families to visit and harvest seasonal crops. Presently under cultivation are 200 acres of Christmas trees, 15 acres of strawberries, 15 acres of blueberries, and 25 acres of pumpkins, gourds and squash. The Jones farmers harvest these crops from three different farm locations known as the Homestead Farm, the Valley Farm, and Pumpkinseed Hill. The farm also manages 50 acres of hay land and 50 acres of woodlots. Over ten acres of grapes are in production for the farm’s winery.”

Each generation of the Jones family has left their positive impact on the farm. Growing up on a dairy farm, fourth generation Philip Jones started the Christmas tree farm in the 1940s. His son Terry, fifth generation, added the wonderful strawberries and blueberries in the 1960s.  Sixth generation Jamie started the winery in 2004. One wonders what the seventh generation might bring to the farm.”

Mid July – Late August

A small berry is readily available mid-July and continues into late-August with approximately a six-to-seven week harvest period. As with our strawberries, we grow several varieties of blueberries on our lands that continuously ripen throughout the season. Do not take their small size the wrong way as they are very versatile and have excellent eating, cooking and freezing qualities. When picking, it is recommended that the berry has a full blue color to guarantee a full, sweet flavor. With a longer availability for picking, we rotate our picking areas to ensure a steady, uniform supply of ripe berries from the start to the end of the season.”
