McAdams Farm

1100 Efland – Cedar Grove Rd, Efland, NC 27243

At McAdams Farm, with a “rich tradition of farming, the fourth and fifth generations to work the land are still going strong in Efland, North Carolina. Howard Jr. occupies his time with the strawberries and fresh vegetables, preparing the land and tending to these crops. His wife Karen is a retired agricultural extension agent for Orange County. She now helps on the farm with the beef cattle and vegetables. Daughters Callie and Elizabeth both help out on the farm when they are home, carrying on the legacy of farming that is over 130 years strong. The farm also relies on a terrific team of year round and seasonal employees who help plant, care for, harvest, and sell the crops we grow.

We raise a wide range of spring, summer, and fall vegetable and fruit crops that are sold at the farm stand and at the Carrboro Farmers’ Market. We also raise Angus cattle and Katahdin sheep. Check out the pictures of what we grow to see more on this!

One constant is that we like to try new varieties to find the most flavorful vegetables and fruits, and longest lasting cut flowers. The taste and reliability of our wide selection of vegetables and fruits, and the color and beauty of our flowers are important to us. We make our farming decisions based on an intention to continue farming for many years to come.”

Strawberries are usually in season from late April through early June, but sometimes earlier or later depending on the weather. We offer the option to pick them yourself, or to pick them up off the table.

At Knob Creek they love everything apples and offer an extensive range of delicious apple based products in their farm shop.

“Knob Creek Orchards has been family owned and operated since 1958.  We started as a small apple and peach business on the Cleveland-Lincoln county line and have grown to sell strawberries, blackberries, and homemade ice cream.

At Knob Creek Orchards we grow a wide variety of fruit.  We open up in the spring each year with strawberries.  In summer you will find peaches and blackberries.  The fall of the year brings us to a close with many varieties of apples.  Be sure to experience the joys of Knob Creek Orchards at every season. We begin harvesting apples in late August through December, so you will have plenty of time to make multiple trips to Knob Creek to experience many types of apples.

We’ve been growing strawberries since 1993.  With twenty years of experience, we strive to provide our customers with berries that, not only look great, but have the taste to match.  We plant new plants every October and cover them with plastic so when spring arrives our berries are well protected and ready to go!

YOU CAN HAVE STRAWBERRIES IN THE FALL!

We begin picking our fall strawberries, straight out of the field, in late October/ early November. Bring your friends and have a bucket of our flavor-rich berries!

Buckwheat Farm

2700 Holland Rd, Apex, NC 27502

Buckwheat Farm is a family run affair.  “In February 1996, our family of five moved from a Cary neighborhood to the country.  We knew we needed to find a way for the property to pay for itself.  That’s when Karma decided it might be fun to grow strawberries.  She had great childhood memories of her family picking strawberries by the trunk full in southern Illinois, where she grew up. She wondered if they could grow strawberries here at their farm and help make great memories for other families.  We attended our first Strawberry Expo in November 1996.  There was certainly a lot to learn and a lot of equipment needed that we didn’t have.  We also learned it takes lots and lots of water for growing and also frost protecting strawberries.  We got busy again.  We dug an irrigation pond and put in under ground water lines.  With absolutely no farming experience, we placed our first plants in the ground in October 1997 and harvested our first crop of strawberries in April 1998.  We have been growing ever since.”

Buckwheat Fam is open from mid-April to early June for strawberry picking and late June to the end of July for blueberry picking.
